Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired), JHNA Founder


John graduated from West Point in 1972 and served in a variety of command and staff positions during a 26-year Army career. Operational tours included the 82d Airborne (twice) and 25th Infantry Divisions. Staff Tours included teaching Organic Chemistry at West Point; serving as a Program Analyst and, later, Aide to General Max Thurman at TRADOC; and on the Joint Staff J-8 where he helped institute the capability and requirements generation processes. His last assignment was as a Division Chief on the Army Staff, DCSOPS (DAMO-FDJ) where he advised the VCSA on Army and Joint Requirements, Quadrennial Defense Review matters and strategic communications. His military schooling includes Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff and National War Colleges. His skills and qualifications include Artillery Master Gunner, Ranger and Master Parachutist. He retired from the military in 1998, and in June 2001 founded John H Northrop & Associates, Inc. (JHNA). 

John and his wife Mary have three sons. Ian (USMA ’98) is currently CEO of JHNA; Jason (USMA ’00) is an active duty LTC serving as acting Deputy J-9, Joint IED Defeat Agency (JIDA); Jan is a High School Teacher and Lacrosse Director in a private school in Florida. John and Mary are Blessed with six grandchildren.
